Periodontology deals with the prevention, diagnose and treatment of diseases of the gum and bone surrounding the teeth. Periodontal disease, if left untreated, can destroy the bone and supporting tissues of the teeth leading to possible loss of teeth.
The periodontium includes the tooth supporting tissues and the gums (gingivae). Mainly the dental plaque is responsible for the occurrence of diseases such as gingivitis or periodontitis, because it is a very potential habitat for germs, especially bacteria. If our immune system has to fight all the time with these invaders, infection occurs.
How does periodontitis occur?
Periodontal disease is the most prevalent disease in the oral cavity and is responsible for more tooth loss than cavities. Symptoms are bleeding gums, unpleasant smell, change int he color and form of the gums. Periodontal (gum) diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, are serious infections that, left untreated, can lead to loss of teeth. Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth.
However the disease can be stopped by special treatments and good oral hygiene. Therefore, it is very important to visit the dentist for a check-up every year.
